A study in consumer behavior

Sustainability. Green. Environmentally Conscious.

What does it all mean? What are the implications; the repercussions, the challenges and the opportunities? As designers, we have an inherent interest and responsibility to look closely at these topics and discover solutions. At Continuum, we believe the solutions and the opportunities in “designing green” exist in better understanding the behaviors, perceptions and motivations of consumers.

Working with our partner, Communispace, Continuum has engaged in a thorough study of consumer behavior as it relates to all things green and sustainable. The study is called Colorblind.

We are engaging thousands of people in the study; visiting them in their homes and talking with them online. The research thus far has proven to be not unlike much of the ethnographic research done here at Continuum; in depth, focused, exhaustive and enlightening. We are finding out what makes these people tick, and looking closely at the choices and behaviors in their daily lives.

The study is in progress, and is scheduled to yield results and concrete findings in the Fall of 2008. We are looking forward to pouring over the results internally as part of an ongoing immersive, sustainability training program we are engaged in.

We also look forward to sharing results as fit with clients, contacts and friends in the design world. That means you.

Check back with us, and let us know if you want to be updated as the project progresses.
