Design for the Real World

Design for new situations, behaviours, technologies and sustainability

Coordinated by Alberto Bassi, scholars and experts used a variety of multidisciplinary perspectives to address these problems. Vanni Pasca, historian and design critic, took stock of the condition of design; for philosopher Fulvio Carmagnola, design is part of a transformed panorama of artefacts in an economic system where increasingly greater significance is placed on the symbolic component; economist Giuliano Noci talked about the value and practicality of sustainable profiles and practices within enterprise and the global economic system; Bruce Fifield, founding member and director of Continuum Italia, illustrated the design driven innovation approach that underlies the methodology and numerous innovative products designed by Continuum.

The book Continuum Milano 87-07, Twenty Years of Design Driven Innovation was presented during the session. This volume, which traces the history of Continuum, provides an introduction to the development of industrial design and the transformation of the figure of designer over the past twenty years. It includes the most important milestones of Continuum's production, presented as the results of the multidisciplinary working group's innovative approach.
