Education:
B.ID, Syracuse University B.Arch., Boston Architectural Center
Personal Trajectory:
I went to Syracuse to study Architecture and 'discovered' Industrial Design.
I gravitated towards 'form follows function' kinds of environments and eventually became Director of Industrial Design for a manufacturer of clinical diagnostic devices. During that time, I had the opportunity to work extensively in Italy as well as Germany and Israel. I started Continuum in 1983 with Jerry Zindler (an engineer and physicist). We wanted to create an environment which would be inclusive of all the design disciplines and be highly user focused and strategic from a business perspective. My current focus is to continue to expand Continuum's capabilities internationally and to apply them to better understand the opportunities in emerging markets and technologies.
Virtues:
Vision, honesty, determination, commitment to quality in everything.
Vices:
None
Favorite Project:
My favorite project was Metaform. It allowed me to observe my own aging parents as sources of insight and inspiration and to understand the user's experience. For me that project embodies the opportunity we have to design a more humane future.
Special Interest:
The original Vespa Scooter. It represents innovation in design and technology. It symbolizes the culture of La Dolce Vita and of Third World mobility...And it was my father's first post World War II vehicle. I love it!
