Revolutionizing an industry

The Pump sneaker took the footwear industry by storm, causing a consumer craze and racking up $1billion in new sales

Design strategy initiatives included analysis of the technical feasibility of various performance-enhancing shoe technologies as well as research into the performance requirements and preferences of both professional and "weekend" athletes.

This front-end work resulted in the invention of the Pump concept for mass customization of fit. The Continuum team then followed through with the creation and in-game testing of an experiential prototype. To resolve the key manufacturing issues, Continuum engineers conducted extensive factory visits throughout Asia in order to assess the production feasibility of a complex new shoe.

Production engineering of the Pump mechanism, and design and engineering of the conspicuous user interface on the tongue of the shoe was seen as a key driver of the line's success. Meeting this challenge was a huge part of making the Pump sneaker the popular product it remains today.
