Johnson Controls - Global Sensor Line
Designing for Multiple Stakeholders
Johnson Controls, Inc. is a global HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) systems manufacturer, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a leader in creating and managing quality building environments and providing solutions that continually exceed customers’ expectations.
Johnson Controls (JCI) approached Continuum to develop a new range of Control Units and Thermostats that would create a contemporary, positive, innovative Johnson Controls image, a global brand identity, and an intuitive and attractive user interface. In particular, JCI was seeking a partner whose concepts and ideas would push the limit of current industry standards and break through the pre-conceptions with its existing design. Continuum began this project by seeking to understand the buying process for HVAC systems and the user requirements from around the globe. Our research team partnered with Johnson Controls to conduct in-depth immersion research in cities across Germany, Italy, the UK, and North America. During the research process, it quickly became evident that there was a very diverse group of stakeholders whose needs had to be addressed: architects, technical consultants, HVAC installers, building managers and end users. Using the information and requirements from these different groups, Continuum drilled down and adopted four main principles to take the redesign forward: ease and intuitiveness of use, contemporary look, globally accepted design, and top performing electronics and mechanics. Using these guidelines, Continuum worked with Johnson Controls to build aesthetic concept models that were then tested with users across the globe. The result was an extremely sleek, elegant design that performed better and was easier to install and use than past models or the competition. Project Manager Paolo Melloni went on to say,
“Continuum has taught me to look at problems from a very different perspective, to think outside of my box."
Building from there, Continuum went on to support the Johnson Controls team in the rationalization of their entire product portfolio, reducing from 340 complex choices down to only 35. The new product line offered a complete range of control units for use in nearly every office, workspace, and hospitality market environment in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The updated aesthetics and simplification of the product catalog, as well as enhanced performance met the demands of all of the various stakeholders. As a result the project was awarded the Johnson Controls internal Merit Award for 2004, the IDEA 2005 Golden Award and the Good Design Award 2005.
"This is a great improvement over the industry's 10-year reliance on programmable thermostats. The design here seems elegant and self-evident and a potential game changer," IDSA judge Larry Keeley, President, Doblin Group
