09. Rockefeller Foundation - Design for Social Impact
Increasing collaboration between the design industry and the social sector.
The Rockefeller Foundation sees the 21st Century as a time to focus on what they call “smart globalization:” harnessing the creative forces of globalization to ensure that the tools and technologies that have significantly improved the human condition in many parts of the world are accessible to more people. Specifically, the Foundation’s Accelerating Innovation for Development Initiative supports the application of open and user-generated models of innovation to the needs of poor or vulnerable people worldwide. As part of this effort, Rockefeller's leaders asked Continuum to create and conduct a workshop alongside the world’s top designers to explore how the design industry can better engage with the social sector.
“The Rockefeller Foundation is investing in this conversation because we feel we can accelerate the systematic contribution of design firms to the social sector. We don’t want to wait 50 years to wake up and say, ‘We have to start working with design firms on these tough problems.’”
Maria Blair, Associate Vice President & Managing Director, The Rockefeller Foundation
