07. Herman Miller - Nala Patient Chair
How can a patient chair communicate optimism?
Developed with an emphasis on wellness and optimism, Nala is a patient chair designed to facilitate and enhance the patients healing process, while incorporating features that make it easier to use for both the patient and the caregiver.
In an effort to leverage Herman Miller’s office seating expertise and help expand its Health and Medical business, Continuum and Herman Miller collaborated to create Nala, a new standard in hospital seating designed to stimulate a patient’s recovery process and, at the same time, provide performance benefits to the caregivers and the healthcare facility.
Nala has been designed to be easy to get in and out of, is a comfortable place to sit for extended periods, and is easy to recline without help. For the caregiver, the chair is easy to move, easy to clean, and easy to prep. In addition, Nala features arms that swing out of the way, helping the caregiver move patients easily from bed to chair and back again.
In October 2008, Herman Miller received Cradle to Cradle Silver certification for the Nala chair. The chair contains 33% recycled content and is 86% recyclable using common tools. The chair not only provides real benefits to patients and healthcare providers, but also the world in which it lives. Nala also received a Silver recognition in the Healthcare Seating category at NeoCon 2008.
