A new system, a new way of working

Haemonetics products meet a variety of blood processing challenges. Continuum was asked to help develop an autologous blood recovery system, the type that recovers a patient's own blood so that it may be reinfused into the body, often eliminating the need for banked blood.

In the Haemonetics system, blood flows through a disposable, single-use plastic tubing set and is processed in a spinning centrifuge chamber, where red cells are separated from other components and washed.

Continuum designers discovered that most blood salvage and recovery systems are large, cumbersome devices. Our response to this was a compact, modular design that could be mounted on a cart and that featured top and bottom sections that could be separated for shipping and storage.

Working closely with the Haemonetics team, we also developed more intuitive user interaction features, including the design of a disposable centrifuge chamber and a better tube management system. Since its introduction, the Cell Saver V remains one of their strongest selling systems.
