Engineering and design get their close up

On this reality-based show, smart, energetic teens approach design challenges with enthusiasm and excitement-- all without a pocket protector.

When we heard statistics and anecdotal evidence about kids and their desire to become engineers, we were disheartened. When we learned about girls and their interest in engineering and science we were downright depressed. We talked about how we could change all this—even a little bit.

And then we heard about Design Squad.

Design Squad is a reality based tv show, produced by PBS and funded by Intel and the National Science Foundation. The show pits two teams of budding teenage engineers and designers against each other in a series of design related challenges.

We jumped on board, acting as design and engineering consultants, brainstorm coaches, model shop advisors and ultimately the location and subject of the show’s big finale as the teams designed for innovative and educationally conscious client L.L. Bean.

It was fun. It was energizing. It was encouraging. And, in tv -land, it was a hit.
